Swapping Instructors In & Out Of Membership
Updated over a week ago

A great majority of our members have more than one instructor teaching. This typically means ‘multi-instructor’ or ‘club’ accounts with instructors with and without insurance. We sometimes hear requests to swop out an instructor who has left the club for a new member joining the team. We’ve introduced a clear written policy on the matter, to help clubs navigate staff and team changes.

I want to replace a new instructor with an old instructor. Do I have to pay anything?

We take this on a case by case basis. Whilst it may sound simple, and whilst in theory you have indeed already paid for that membership period, the key asset is the instructor membership. We’re always very happy to transfer over any remaining period of instructor insurance without charge. Where it can get tricky is the membership element.

Imagine, for example, a club has five silver instructors. All are enrolled to our courses, and one in particular leaves the club. We receive a request to replace them with a new team member. In doing so, presuming no cost was incurred, the new instructor can now also complete all of our qualifications and training, and would also receive documentation and certification when joining. The expired instructor still has our named certification for the year. It’s void, but the printed docs wouldn’t tell a member of the public without them going to our national register, and checking.

In this situation, we’ve had a very small number of clubs taking advantage of BMABA’s supportive stance to staff changes, using instructor rotations to qualify and train multiple people, swapping them out everytime they have achieved their safeguarding and first aid in place of another.

In light of this, we will typically allow a club one initial changeover of instructor mid-term without cost. We won’t issue printed documents, but the new instructor can embark on courses and qualifications (if included in the membership tier). Thereafter, whilst we’re happy to transfer the portion of fees attributed to insurance, there is likely to be a pro-rata charge for the instructor membership element.

This protects our community of instructors by ensuring vital funds needed to keep growing BMABA aren’t sucked out by a very, very small niche of clubs who would ideally like our services for free! We operate this policy on a discretionary basis, so please do approach us with any case-specific questions or requests and we’ll do our best to help.
